Order From Korea Before You Arrive: How a Camera Lens Was Waiting at the Hotel on Check-In Day

One of the most common requests we get is not from someone standing in Seoul. It is from someone still at home, three weeks out from a flight, looking at a Korean price for a piece of camera gear and doing the maths.

The specific case: a used-but-mint 85mm prime lens listed on Naver Shopping at roughly ₩620,000. The same lens, new, in the traveller’s home country was about 30% more once tax was in. The plan was simple in his head — buy it now, pick it up at the hotel on arrival. In practice, three things blocked it.

Quick answer

You can order from Korean stores before you land, but you cannot do it yourself: Naver Shopping requires a Korean phone number for identity verification, most sellers reject foreign-issued cards, and a hotel will not accept a parcel for a guest who has not checked in yet. The workaround is a proxy buyer who places the order with a Korean account and card, has it shipped to their own address, holds it, and then delivers it to your hotel on the day you check in. Our fee for this is ₩8,000 per product link, plus 6% on the amount above ₩50,000 for payment and currency handling. Nothing is added to the exchange rate.

Why you cannot just order it yourself

1. Naver wants a Korean identity

Naver Shopping is not a single store — it is a marketplace layered on top of thousands of independent Korean sellers. Checkout runs through Naver Pay, and Naver Pay wants a verified Korean account, which means a Korean mobile number tied to your name. A tourist SIM or eSIM will not clear that check, because the verification runs against the carrier’s subscriber record, not just the number.

2. The card is declined even when checkout loads

Some sellers do expose an international card option. In practice foreign Visa and Mastercard cards fail at the domestic payment-gateway layer more often than they succeed, and the error message is usually a generic Korean-language failure code that tells you nothing. This is the single most common point where people give up.

3. The hotel will not hold it

Even if the order goes through, delivery is the next wall. Korean domestic shipping on an in-stock item is typically 1–3 days. If you order three weeks out, the parcel arrives three weeks before you do. Most Seoul hotels will accept a parcel for a confirmed booking a few days ahead — but not three weeks, and many refuse outright for anything of real value. A ₩620,000 lens sitting in a luggage room for twenty days is a conversation nobody at the front desk wants to have.

How this one actually ran

1. Link and options sent in chat. He pasted the Naver product URL and specified the exact variant — there were two listings from the same seller, one with the lens hood included and one without.
2. Seller contacted in Korean before purchase. This is the step that matters most on used gear. We asked about the shutter count on the body it came off, whether the box and papers were there, and whether the seller would confirm the serial number. He would. On used camera equipment we always ask before buying, because a Korean-language question from a Korean number gets an honest answer; the same question in English usually gets no answer at all.
3. Quote issued and paid. Lens ₩620,000 + service fee ₩8,000 + payment handling ₩34,200 (6% of the amount above ₩50,000) = ₩662,200, paid by PayPal.
4. Bought and inspected. It arrived at our address in two days. We opened it, photographed the glass under a light for fungus and separation, confirmed the serial matched, mounted it on a body to check the aperture blades, and sent the photos to the chat.
5. Held for nineteen days. Storage is free for 30 days.
6. Delivered on check-in day. Handed to the front desk of his hotel in Jung-gu on the afternoon of his arrival, with a photo of the handover and the name of the staff member who signed for it.

The equivalent new price at home, converted, was about ₩880,000. Buying used through a proxy still left him roughly ₩218,000 ahead, and he carried it home in his camera bag — which is the part that makes camera gear such a good fit for this. There is no international shipping and no customs event at all, because it leaves the country in your hand luggage.

What to watch for

Used electronics have no warranty across borders

A Korean domestic warranty on new gear is generally not honoured abroad, and used items from an individual seller have none at all. We inspect and photograph before we hand anything over, and we will not buy something that looks wrong — but we cannot guarantee the authenticity or condition of goods sold by a private individual beyond what an in-person inspection shows.

Lithium batteries are a separate problem

If your item includes a rechargeable battery — a camera body, a flash with an internal cell, a power bank — and you were planning to have it shipped to you rather than carrying it, stop. Carriers will not accept rechargeable lithium batteries out of Korea. Carrying it in your cabin bag is fine and is what everyone does. This only becomes a problem if your plans change and you want it posted.

Tell us your arrival, not your check-in time

If you land at 06:00 and the room is not ready until 15:00, the front desk still takes the parcel — we just need to know which day, and which name the booking is under.

Order early enough that a bad listing can be replaced

The real benefit of ordering weeks out is not the shipping time, it is the margin for error. If the seller goes quiet, or the item turns out to be worse than described, there is time to find another one. Ordering four days before you fly removes that cushion.

FAQ

How far in advance can you order?

Storage is free for 30 days, so about a month is comfortable. Beyond that, ask — it is usually fine, we just want to agree it first rather than discover it later.

What if the item arrives damaged or wrong?

We open and photograph everything before it goes to you, so a problem is found while there is still time to act. With a Korean seller and a Korean account we can raise a return the normal way, which is not something you could do from abroad. If it is genuinely not what was listed, you get the goods cost back — the service fee covers work already done and is not refunded.

Can you buy from a seller who only ships within Korea?

That is most of what we do. Our address is in Korea, so from the seller’s side it is an ordinary domestic order.

Does this work outside Seoul?

Buying works anywhere in Korea — the seller is shipping domestically either way. Hand delivery to your hotel is Seoul and Busan. Elsewhere we post it to your hotel by domestic courier, which adds a day and the courier fee at cost.
