Can Foreigners Use Coupang in Korea? Sign-Up, Foreign Cards, WOW and What Actually Works

Yes if you live in Korea, and mostly no if you are visiting. Coupang's own FAQ says foreigners living in Korea can join and anyone can sign up with an email. Your first purchase, though, needs phone identity verification, and prepaid phones cannot pass it. Foreign Visa, Mastercard and JCB cards work only through Coupay, which requires an ARC.

Correction (October 2026): An earlier version of this post said Coupang is Korean-only, that sign-up accepts an international phone number, and that checkout "declines most foreign-issued cards". All three were wrong or had no source. Coupang launched an English interface (beta) on 6 May 2025. Verification happens at your first purchase, not at sign-up. Coupang's FAQ states exactly which foreign cards work. We also removed delivery-time, user-count and price-comparison figures that we could not source.

Quick Answer

Suppose you have an ARC (alien registration card) and a Korean phone line registered in your own name that is not prepaid. Then you can do everything yourself. Switch the app to English, verify at your first purchase, and register your own Visa, Mastercard or JCB in Coupay. If you are a visitor on a prepaid or roaming number without an ARC, Coupang's rules block the purchase step, though browsing still works. In that case, browse in English, copy the product link and have someone in Korea order it to your hotel. Borrow a relative's Korean number only if that person will also pay. Coupang verifies against their details, and the card has to be in the account holder's name.

Is Coupang available in English?

Yes, as a beta. Coupang's press release says it launched an English app interface on 6 May 2025 for foreigners living in Korea. You switch it on in the language setting under My Coupang. It covers search, product pages, orders, checkout, Rocket Delivery, 로켓직구 (Rocket Direct Purchase) and the WOW benefits screen. The PC site has no language menu, but pages can appear in English if your browser language is English.

We checked in October 2026. Coupang's FAQ (last updated 20 July 2026) warns that the English version may contain mistranslations and that the Korean version applies if the two differ. Switching the language does not change any of the verification or payment rules below.

Can you sign up for Coupang without a Korean phone number?

Signing up is easy. You enter an email ID, password, name and phone number. The block comes later. According to Coupang's FAQ, phone identity verification (본인인증) happens at your first purchase. You can hold unverified accounts, but you cannot buy anything until you verify. The FAQ says foreigners living in Korea can join, and that use of the service is restricted if verification is not possible.

Coupang's FAQ (개인정보 ep.2) says these lines cannot pass verification:

• Prepaid phones (선불 휴대폰)
• Lines registered to a company
• Lines not registered with a carrier

If you verify with an ARC number, Coupang checks it against the Ministry of Justice database. Enter your name exactly as it appears on the ARC: all capital letters, no spaces and no special characters. It must also match the name your mobile carrier has on file. If the SMS code never arrives, make sure you have not blocked 1577-7011 (Coupang) or 02-2033-8500 (한국모바일인증). After several failed logins from a new device, login is locked until midnight that day.

Using a friend's or relative's number: Coupang lets you register someone else's phone number. Verification, however, has to succeed with that person's details, and some services (subscription delivery, adult products) are limited to the verified person. Can you pay on Coupang with a foreign card?

Officially yes, with conditions. Coupang's payment FAQ says foreign-issued Visa, Mastercard and JCB cards in your own name can be used only through Coupay. Its card-registration FAQ adds these rules:

• Only Visa, Mastercard and JCB foreign cards can be registered. Amex is not on the list.
• The name on the card must match the Coupang account name, and registration fails if verification fails.
• You can register up to 10 Korean cards and up to 3 foreign cards.
• If your card issuer's 3DS check fails, Coupang says to register the card in Coupay instead, which runs its own identity check.

Here is the catch for visitors. Coupang's Coupay FAQ says foreigners must live in Korea and hold a valid ARC. The names on your bank account, your Coupang account and your own Korean-carrier phone must also match exactly, including capitals, spacing and name order. The sibling's-phone workaround usually fails at this step, because the account is verified in their name and your card is in yours. We could not confirm on Coupang's pages whether PayPal or Apple Pay are accepted, so we do not claim either. If your card is declined elsewhere too, here is what each decline message actually means.

Can foreigners get Coupang WOW?

We could not confirm this during our check. Coupang's newsroom shows that WOW rose to ₩7,890 a month for new members from 13 April 2024. We did not verify that this is still the price, or whether you can join WOW without an ARC. Paying for WOW still goes through checkout, so the verification and card rules above come first. The fresh-grocery service is called 로켓프레시 (Rocket Fresh), not "Coupang Fresh" as our old version said. In 2021 Coupang described it as a WOW-only benefit with overnight delivery windows. Those are 2021 statements, and we do not present them as current.

Can Coupang deliver to your hotel?

We found no Coupang page on hotel delivery, and each hotel sets its own parcel rules. Before anyone orders, ask the front desk whether they hold parcels for guests and until when, and get the hotel's full Korean address. One trap other guides miss involves 로켓직구 items, which are overseas direct-purchase listings. Coupang's FAQ says the customs code (개인통관고유부호) must belong to the recipient, and you cannot view it after ordering. If a listing is marked 로켓직구, sort out the customs code before you buy. Coupang Eats uses the same Coupang account (Coupang's FAQ says one account covers Coupang, Coupang Eats, Coupang Play and R.LUX). We would not expect it to skip the steps above.

Does Coupang ship internationally?

We found no Coupang page about sending orders from Korea to other countries, so treat international shipping as unverified. The one overseas option we confirmed is in the app. You can switch the country/region to Taiwan, which offers English or Chinese and needs a separate Taiwan account. Coupang's FAQ says a Korean phone number cannot currently be used to open one. If you are in Taiwan, try that before using a proxy. What do our own Coupang orders show?

Between 22 September and 12 October 2026, our paid order log has seven orders built on Coupang links, eight items in total. These are the only cases we cite. The log records the order and the fees. It does not record product names or arrival times, so we do not quote delivery speeds here. We wrote up one Coupang and Naver order separately: an art book and photocards that reached a hotel overnight.

What the log shows:

• A link is enough. One order came from a link.coupang.com share link copied from the app. On four orders the customer only sent the link and we filled in the order form for them.
• Fees. Our standard fee is ₩8,000 per product link and ₩5,000 for each extra item from the same shop. Four orders were charged the standard rate, and three had a higher service fee.
• Payment processing. Five orders carried a separate payment and FX processing line of 5–6%, and two had none. We do not add a markup to the exchange rate. You can pay by PayPal, card, Wise or Alipay.

When should you not use us?

• You live in Korea with an ARC and a Korean line in your name. Use Coupang directly in English with Coupay. It costs less than our fee.

Can tourists use Coupang without a Korean phone number?

Tourists can sign up and browse, but they cannot buy. Coupang's FAQ says phone identity verification is required at the first purchase, and prepaid phones cannot pass it. Without a Korean line registered in your own name, the practical route is having someone in Korea place the order.

Does Coupang accept foreign credit cards?

Yes, but only through Coupay, according to Coupang's payment FAQ. The card must be a Visa, Mastercard or JCB in the same name as the Coupang account, with a limit of three foreign cards. Coupay for foreigners requires living in Korea with a valid ARC, so most short-stay visitors cannot use it.

Does Coupang take American Express?

Amex is not on the list. Coupang's card-registration FAQ names only Visa, Mastercard and JCB as foreign cards that can be registered. If Amex is your only card, you will need another card or a proxy.

Is Coupang in English?
