Left a Bag Behind in Korea? How It Gets From the Hotel to Your Forwarding Warehouse
Something stayed in Korea after you flew home — a bag at the hotel, a parcel that arrived late, a box at a friend’s place. Moving it to a forwarding warehouse is straightforward, but only if someone in Korea can do the handover.
This request always arrives with the same first line, in some variation: “I left something in Korea and I am already home.”
In this case it was a camera bag with a spare lens, a charger and a jacket, left in the wardrobe of a hotel in Hongdae. The traveller noticed at his connecting airport. The hotel had it, had emailed him, and was holding it — but the email was in Korean, the hotel would not ship internationally, and he already had a forwarding-warehouse address in Korea from a service he used for shopping. He needed the bag to get from the hotel to that warehouse.
Quick answer
A hotel or a friend in Korea can usually hold an item for a while, but almost none of them will pack and ship it internationally, and most will not arrange a courier for you either. Someone in Korea has to collect it and hand it over. Domestic movement inside Korea is cheap and fast: a standard courier is ₩4,000–8,000 and takes one to two days, and a same-day quick courier across Seoul is roughly ₩20,000–40,000 depending on distance and size. We coordinate the pickup, verify the item is the right one, and hand it to whichever forwarder or carrier you want — courier fares and packing materials are passed through at cost, and our handling is ₩20,000, quoted before you pay.
Why the hotel will not just do it
Korean hotels are generally good about holding lost property — the legal expectation is that found items are kept and returned. What they will not do:
- Ship internationally. This requires a customs declaration in the sender’s name, a commercial invoice, and someone accepting liability for the contents. No front desk is doing this for a departed guest.
- Book and pay for a courier. Some will if you can pay them, but paying a Korean hotel from abroad without a Korean card is its own problem.
- Pack it properly. A camera bag handed to a courier in a paper bag will not survive the trip.
- Correspond in English at length. Some can, many cannot, and the exchange usually needs several rounds — confirming which item, which room, which date, and who is authorised to collect it.
And there is a deadline: most hotels hold lost property for 30 days to 6 months, but valuable items are often handed to the police after a shorter window. Move quickly.

For a camera bag we used a quick courier. A hub-sorted parcel gets thrown; a quick courier is a single person carrying it door to door on a motorcycle or in a car. For ₩25,000 on a bag holding a lens worth far more, it is not a close decision.
How this one ran
- He sent the hotel name, room number, dates and a description of the bag, plus the forwarding warehouse address.
- We called the hotel in Korean. They confirmed they had it. They asked for written authorisation from the guest to release it to a third party — a normal and reassuring request.
- He emailed that authorisation to the hotel with a photo of his passport page, copying us.
- A quick courier collected it the same afternoon and brought it to us rather than straight to the warehouse.
- We opened, photographed and repacked it. Every item photographed, sent to chat, confirmed as his. Then packed properly for onward handling.
- Handed to his forwarding warehouse the next morning, with the tracking number and the warehouse’s receipt confirmation sent to him.
That middle step — bringing it to us first — is the one worth insisting on. Sending it straight from hotel to warehouse means nobody ever confirms it is the right bag, or that the lens is still in it, until it reaches another country.

Before you ask us, try this
Genuinely — some of these do not need us at all:
- Left on the subway or a train? Seoul Metro runs Lost and Found offices at Sindorim and City Hall stations, and KORAIL has its own. Items are logged and searchable.
- Left in a taxi? If you paid by card or booked through Kakao T there is a record of the vehicle. Report it to the Seoul city taxi complaint line — the recovery rate is genuinely good.
- Left at the airport? Incheon has a lost property centre in both terminals and will hold items.
- Left at a hotel? Email them immediately, in English, with your booking reference, dates, room number and a description. Many will reply. Ask them to hold it and confirm in writing.
Where we help is the gap after that: the hotel has it, has confirmed it, and now it has to physically move — and you are in another country.
What cannot be shipped out of Korea
If the plan is to ship it home rather than to a warehouse, some things in a left-behind bag will stop the shipment:
- Rechargeable lithium batteries and power banks — refused by all carriers. This includes most K-pop light sticks. A charger is usually fine; the battery itself is not.
- Perfume, aerosols and sprays — flammable, refused.
- Food containing meat or dairy to the US, EU, UK or Australia — and that includes ramyeon soup sachets.
- Alcohol and tobacco.
We check the contents against your destination country before shipping and tell you what has to come out. It is much better to find this in Seoul than to have a parcel destroyed at the border.
FAQ
How long will the hotel hold it?
Usually at least 30 days, often longer, but valuables may go to the police sooner. Contact them today rather than this weekend.
Can you collect from a friend or an Airbnb host instead?
Yes — that is often simpler than a hotel, because there is no authorisation process. We just need their address and a time that suits them.
Can you collect from outside Seoul?
Yes. Outside Seoul we normally use a standard courier to bring it to us rather than a quick courier, which is slower but far cheaper.
Will you tell me what is in it before shipping?
Always. Everything is opened, photographed and confirmed with you before it goes anywhere.
What about customs on my own belongings?
Used personal effects being returned to their owner are treated more favourably in most countries than a commercial shipment, but the rules vary and a declaration is still required. We declare contents honestly, note that they are used personal items, and tell you what your country is likely to charge before you commit.
