Sending Flowers to a Hotel in Seoul From Abroad: Why the Florist Won’t Take Your Card, and What Works Instead

His wife and their daughter had flown to Seoul for a week. He had stayed home for work. Their anniversary fell on the Thursday of that week, and he wanted flowers waiting in the room when they came back from Gyeongbokgung.

He had already spent an hour trying. Two Korean florist websites rejected his card at the final screen. The one international flower-delivery site that listed Seoul wanted the equivalent of ₩120,000 for a bouquet that looked like a ₩45,000 bouquet, and would not commit to a delivery time.

Quick answer

Korean flower shops deliver beautifully and cheaply — a good hand-tied bouquet is ₩40,000–90,000 with same-day delivery in Seoul for around ₩5,000–15,000. The problem is that nearly all of them take orders through Korean-only sites, Naver Pay, or a phone call, and reject foreign-issued cards. International flower portals solve the payment but roughly double or triple the price and subcontract to a shop you never see. The cheaper route is a proxy: we order from an actual Seoul florist, agree the time with the hotel, and send you a photo of the finished bouquet before it goes out. The florist’s own price and delivery charge are passed through at cost and quoted to you before you pay; our fee on top is ₩8,000 for the order, plus 6% on the amount above ₩50,000.

Why the direct route fails

Korean florists are small and local

Flower retail in Korea is overwhelmingly independent neighbourhood shops. Most have a Naver Smart Store or a Kakao channel rather than a real website, take payment through Naver Pay or a bank transfer, and communicate by KakaoTalk. None of that is reachable from abroad without a Korean identity.

The international portals are a markup layer

The global flower-delivery sites do not have florists in Seoul. They pass your order to a local shop and take a large cut, plus a currency conversion spread. What arrives is a Korean shop’s bouquet at two or three times the Korean price, and because you never speak to the shop, you cannot ask for anything specific.

Hotels have rules about deliveries to rooms

This is the part people do not anticipate. Most Seoul hotels will not let a courier or a florist go up to a room. Flowers are held at the front desk and the guest is called. If you want them in the room as a surprise, that needs to be arranged with the hotel in advance, in Korean, and some hotels simply refuse. It is worth deciding early which of those two you actually want, because it changes how the day runs.

How this one ran

1. He described what he wanted, not a product: “something soft, white and pink, not red roses, she likes ranunculus.” A colour and a feeling is plenty.
2. We found a florist near the hotel in Jongno and asked in Korean what was good that morning. Ranunculus was in season, which is the sort of thing you only learn by asking.
3. Two options photographed and sent — the shop’s previous work at ₩45,000 and at ₩70,000. He took the ₩45,000 one, because the florist said the ranunculus looked better in a smaller hand-tied arrangement than padded out into a bigger one. We pass on that kind of advice when we get it.
4. Hotel called. They would not place flowers in the room, but they would hold them chilled at the desk and call her the moment she returned. We took that.
5. A handwritten card in Korean and English. He sent the message in English; we wrote it out and photographed it so he could check it before it was sealed.
6. Delivered at 16:40, photo of the finished bouquet sent to him before it left the shop, and a photo of it at the front desk after.

What travels well as a hotel gift, and what does not

Works

• Flowers — if you accept the front desk handover. Korean florists are genuinely excellent.
• Cake — Korean bakery cakes are a strong option and shops will write a message on them. Order for a specific hour; they are refrigerated goods.
• A fruit basket or gift box — the standard Korean gifting format, keeps well, and a hotel will hold it without complaint.
• A department store gift item with proper wrapping — Korean gift wrapping is a craft and shops take it seriously.

Does not work

• Anything alcoholic. We do not handle alcohol.
• Balloons in a room. Needs room access, which most hotels refuse.
• Anything that has to be a total surprise at an exact minute. The front desk will call her. Plan around that instead of fighting it.

FAQ

How much notice do you need?

Same day is usually possible if you ask before about 14:00 Korea time. A day ahead is much better, because it lets us confirm the hotel’s delivery policy before you have paid for anything.

Can you write the card in Korean?

Yes, and we will show you the wording before it is sealed. Plenty of people send it in both languages.

What if she is out when it arrives?

The front desk holds it. Korean hotels are used to this — flowers, cakes and gift boxes arrive for guests constantly.

Can you do this in Busan or elsewhere?

Yes for any city with a florist we can reach by phone, which is effectively all of them. Delivery outside a florist’s own area costs more.

Can I send a gift to someone who lives in Korea, not a hotel?

Yes, and it is easier — a residential address has no front-desk policy to work around. We need the Korean address and their phone number for the courier.
